This study discusses the potentialities and current situation of the electricity generation from non-conventional renewable energy sources (NCRES) in Colombia. In particular, three scenarios considering the increment of NCRES electricity based generation installed capacity are discussed. The three scenarios are compared to the 2020 forecast of the Energy and Mining Planning Unit ((UPME). Overall, it id shown that Colombia has a significant unused NCRES potential, which makes possible to realize the 6% target for NCRE based electricity generation capacity installed by 2020. In particular, the photovoltaic energy is foresee to account for over half of the NCRE mix. Even though the law 1715 is a progress towards integrating NCRE to the National Electric System, more policies and developments are required, to further the NCRE based installed generation capacities.

Assessment of the energy efficiency estimation methods on induction motors considering real-time monitoring

Different methods have been developed to estimate the energy efficiency of induction motors. The accuracy of these methods vary with the load factor, the unbalanced voltage (UV) and harmonics. The feasibility of these methods for efficiency estimation in real-time were theoretically and experimentally assessed during the operation under different operational conditions (i.e. balanced sinusoidal voltage (BSV), harmonics, UV and harmonics with UV). Results show that for load factors over 80%, the air-gap method is applicable under any condition, while the slip method is only applicable under BSV or balanced harmonic voltage. Moreover, for load factors over 40%, the nameplate method is applicable under BSV. Other methods result in errors over 8% and optimization methods are not applicable for real-time monitoring. Electric systems generally operates with some degree of UV and harmonics, while induction motors mostly operate with load factors below 60%, limiting the use of these methods for real-time measurement.

By 2013, the province of Cienfuegos in Cuba consumed about 5165 GWh of primary energy, of which an estimated 60 % was used to produce 767 GWh of electricity. 29 % of the primary energy was obtained from renewable fuel, and only less than 5 % of the biomass energy, was used to produce about 27 GWh of biomass based electricity. This study proposes and assesses opportunities to produce electricity from biomass in the sugar industry of the province. The scenarios considered include: upgrading the agricultural yield of sugarcane, producing energy cane and combusting it after the sugarcane milling season, combusting the filter cake, combusting marabu (Dichrostachys cinerea, a bush tree considered a plague in Cuba) after the sugarcane milling season, and updating the electricity generation technology. Results are given for the different scenarios and it is shown that a combined scenario, including upgrading agricultural yield of sugarcane, upgrading electricity generation technology, combusting filter cake, and producing energy cane to generate electricity after the sugarcane milling season, thus allowing to use the generation units in sugar factories during 8000 h per year affords a potential production of 1150 GWh of electricity, 50 % more than consumed in Cienfuegos province in 2013. © 2016, Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht.

The involvement of universities is crucial to identify how Cleaner Production strategies are formed in practice so that companies integrate sustainability into their strategies. This paper discusses the experience of establishing and operating the Cleaner Production Center at the University of Cienfuegos. From 2008 to 2011, the University of Cienfuegos, the Free University of Brussels (Belgium) and the University of Leuven (Belgium) implemented a project, financially supported by the Flemish Interuniversity Council (Belgium) allowing establishing a Cleaner Production Center at the University of Cienfuegos. This first project was followed by a second University of Cienfuegos - University of Leuven one. So far, the collaboration allowed to establish a master program on Cleaner Production that constitutes a bridge between the university and the production and service sector, allowing to promote and implement cleaner production strategies. 34 master students graduated during two graduations and a third one is ongoing. Among the most important results of the master thesis were the yearly reduction of the emission of 60 000 t/a of carbon dioxide equivalent and of the electricity consumption by 400 MWh/a at a cement plant. Research activities on Cleaner Production were upgraded through the collaboration resulting in several publications in peer-reviewed journals with impact factor. This type of North-South cooperation aided establishing and developing the center, by transferring expertise and experience and by providing part of the necessary funding which is difficult to raise by developing economies. This case study offers an interesting practice example about developing academic (training, research) values on Cleaner Production.

There are multiple elements which enable coal geochemistry: (1) boiler and pollution control system design parameters, (2) temperature of flue gas at collection point, (3) feed coal and also other fuels like petroleum coke, tires and biomass geochemistry and (4) fuel feed particle size distribution homogeneity distribution, maintenance of pulverisers, etc. Even though there is a large number of hazardous element pollutants in the coal-processing industry, investigations on micrometer and nanometer-sized particles including their aqueous colloids formation reactions and their behaviour entering the environment are relatively few in numbers. X-ray diffraction (XRD), High Resolution-Transmission Electron microscopy (HR-TEM)/ (Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy) EDS/ (selected-area diffraction pattern) SAED, Field Emission-Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM)/EDS and granulometric distribution analysis were used as an integrated characterization techniques tool box to determine both geochemistry and nanomineralogy for coal fly ashes (CFAs) from Brazil´s largest coal power plant. Ultrafine/nano-particles size distribution from coal combustion emissions was estimated during the tests. In addition the iron and silicon content was determined as 54.6% of the total 390 different particles observed by electron bean, results aimed that these two particles represent major minerals in the environment particles normally. These data may help in future investigations to asses human health actions related with nano-particles.

The emissions of greenhouse gases stand as a major threat of today. Moving towards CO2 neutral or low-carbon economies is a need to achieve sustainable development. This study assesses the potentialities to move Cuba towards a low-carbon economy by replacing the current electricity mix, dominated by fossil fuel based electricity generation, with biomass-based electricity generation. Because of their significant potential, the study focusses on the use of sugarcane, energy cane and marabu (dichrostachys cinerea) based biomass. Results show that biomass can support over 97% of the electricity generation planned by the Cuban government for 2030. Replacing fossil fuel based electricity with biomass-based electricity today potentially reduces up to 81% of the greenhouse gas emissions as compared to the emission levels of 2012. Implementing biomass-based electricity generation in Cuba can also reduce the costs of electricity generation by 1–30% (depending on the market price of fossil fuels).

El sector hotelero en el contexto Latinoamericano se enfrenta al reto de ser competitivo y sostenible. La eficiencia en el uso de los recursos y Producción más limpia (RECP) como la estrategia que integra la eficiencia productiva, protección ambiental y desarrollo humano, permitiendo crear valor y mejorar el desempeño competitivo. Este estudio caracteriza el aporte existente de la RECP y describe su potencial contribución a la competitividad en el sector hotelero del Departamento del Atlántico-Colombia, desde la perspectiva de la estrategia competitiva y la creación de valor compartido, desarrollando una investigación descriptiva con enfoque cuantitativo y análisis descriptivo en 36 hoteles mediante un instrumento con preguntas cerradas de escala nominal y Likert. Observándose que la aplicación de RECP permite obtener condiciones de efectividad económica, ambiental y social en un nivel medio, orientadas estrictamente a la maximización del beneficio económico y al cumplimiento de la regulación. Se concluye que la RECP ofrece la oportunidad de replantear las estrategias competitivas orientándolas a crear valor compartido mediante la vinculación de variables ambientales y sociales a la gestión organizacional como fuente de innovación, productividad y ventaja competitiva.

Electricity stands as the main energy used for lead-acid battery (LAB) manufacturing. This study introduces an energy management methodology to address the electricity consumption in lead-acid battery plants, improving efficiency standards. The “equivalent battery production” is introduced to define the energy performance criteria to be met in the different production sections of the battery plant. The methodology combines the guidelines of the ISO 50001 standard with the energy management framework for manufacturing plants. The result is a structured approach for detecting inefficiencies and pinpointing their sources. The management methodology was implemented during 2016. In the formation area 222 MWh were saved during 2016. This saving accounts for 3.9% less electricity than forecasted by the energy baseline of the area. Additionally, the emission of some 40 tCO2.eq. associated with the generation of the electricity production were saved. Moreover, at plant level 424 MWh were saved, which account for 3.6% less electricity than forecasted by the energy baseline of the plant. In total, around 76 tCO2.eq. were saved as a result of the electricity savings in the plant.

As pork is indispensable in the diet of Cuban people, the government was forced to prioritize its production. Pig production causes several environmental impacts related with air, water and soil pollution, which can be quantified with the application of Life Cycle Assessment that allows to optimize products and processes by identifying their environmental impacts. Farming systems considered in different Life Cycle Assessment studies show substantial differences in their characteristics, namely: animal productivity, feed composition, manure management and production period, which influences the environmental performance of each system. Therefore, each study is unique for the system it assesses and should be analyzed individually. In Cuba, the environmental implications of pig production, whose understanding is cornerstone to eventually adopt more environmentally sound practices while ensuring high productivity standards, are yet to be quantified. This study provides some fundamental insights in the life cycle of pig production in the province of Cienfuegos. The assessment if focused in large farms of the province of Cienfuegos which causes large environmental impacts. Large farms accounts for the production of 77% of the pigs delivered to slaughter houses in the province. Pig production in Cienfuegos accounts for 7-12% of Cuban production. The quantification of the environmental impacts of pig production resulted in an impact per finished pig of 120 kg of live weight of 1892 MJ abiotic depletion of fossil fuels, 1019 kg-CO2-eq. global warming potential, 36 kg 1.4-dichlorobenzene-eq. human toxicity, 17 kg 1.4-dichlorobenzene-eq. terrestrial toxicity, 1 kg 1.4-ethylene-eq. photo-oxidant formation, 12 kg-SO2-eq. acidification potential and 6 kg PO4-eq. eutrophication potential. It appeared that the main opportunities to improve the environmental performance of pig production in Cienfuegos are reduction of the impacts of the anaerobic lagoons used for manure management on global warming potential, acidification potential and eutrophication and the impact on acidification potential of pig housing. Direct land spreading of manure appears as the best alternative to lagooning, considering the current situation of pig breeding in Cienfuegos.

La evaluación de la calidad de vida urbana se desarrolla a través de indicadores denominados índices de calidad de vida urbana (ICVU), que permiten expresarla en escala numérica siendo de gran importancia para investigadores, planificadores y encargados de la gestión pública en la toma de decisiones. En Colombia no se ha realizado trabajos previos que comparen integralmente según su Calidad de Vida Urbana (CVU) las diferentes ciudades, es por ello que en el presente artículo se realiza una evaluación de esta en las seis principales ciudades colombianas, diseñando y evaluando un ICVU que integra cuatro dimensiones (Social, Económica, Ambiental, Servicios y Gestión), se toma en cuenta para ello diez indicadores y cuarenta y nueve sub-indicadores. El estudio comprende datos de los años 2011, 2012 y 2013.

This study integrates different techniques to analyze some issues of the air conditioning system of a commercial establishment. A thermographic camera is used to assess the temperature profile in the area covered by the air conditioning system and also to detect the higher temperature spots. The air conditioning system of the facility is simulated using the software Trnsys to estimate the indoor temperature and the thermal load profile. Afterward, using computer-aided design, a model of the air circulation in the thermal zone is developed, which is simulated using the finite element method to obtain the temperature profile in the area. As a result, a new operational scheme of the air conditioning that improves the temperature profile is proposed.

The model is developed from experimental data measured during the operation of a sugarcane mill. The measured data is fitted using the top shaft rotation period of the mill and dividing on intervals to individually fit each interval obtaining a function defined by parts. The resulting model shows a correlation coefficient of R2 ≥ 0.97. This allow including the floating effect in the study and design of other elements of sugarcane mills.

This research deepens on the methods to the solution of the hyper static systems applicable for the assessment resistance of flywheels which are applied to a flywheel of a hammer mill. The results of the analytical methods were validated through a Finite Element Analysis, the results show differences minors than 10%. The equivalent strength in the rim is almost zero in the middle plane of the beam and increases as it moves away from it, and remains constant throughout the rays. It was also observed that in all the studied cases the equivalent tension decreases when the number of rays increases because of the flywheels stiffness increases. Also, graphics tools are obtained to a fast determination of the equivalent tension in the rim according to the number of rays and the speed of operation.

“Cleaner Production“(CP) is about less and more efficient energy and materials use and the substitution of more harmful products (for the environment and health) by less dangerous ones. CP was the reply of the industry to the call for sustainable development as launched by the WCED (1987) and further elaborated in Rio's Agenda 21 (UN, 1992). During the past 25 years, the concept was put in practice. During this period it changed in scope, methods, and application area. This provided a deeper socio-economic impact to an idea that was originally launched to awaken industry on its environmental responsibilities. This paper provides a review of essentials that contributed to the fundamental changes in CP during the most recent quarter of a century. It takes off with a review of CP definitions illustrating the changes of the content. Changes in scope are exemplified with the increasing importance of “Corporate Social Responsibility” (CSR). This includes that post-modern companies have not only responsibilities on their economic performance and the environment, but should also act on issues including human rights and resources, business ethics, and community involvement. The links between CP and green and circular economy are indicated. The CP approach is increasingly applied outside the industry. CP for sustainable tourism is discussed in more detail but is only an example of the wider application in e.g. agriculture or health services.

In this paper was applied a method of energy planning, compatible with ISO 50001 standard, in an industrial laundry. In the analysis, three input variables were considered: level of production, technical condition of the system and operating regime. The past, present and future of fuel oil consumption in the steam generation and use was examined, establishing the causes of deterioration of consumption indicator. A study of load and capacity in the system identified potential savings through improved operating regime. A new regime for the operation of boilers was proposed and implemented, saving 16% of fuel. With the results of these measurements, the baseline was developed and goals are established.

Thermoeconomic evaluation alms at diagnosing the malfunction of energy systems and at optimizing their structure and performance. One of the main limitations of this approach is the adequate treatment of dissipative components, i e, components where exergy is destroyed without gaining thermodynamically useful output (condensers, throttling valves, etc.). Such components are contituents of some energy systems and influence their overall thermal efficiency. This research introduces the use of a different criterion of exergy efficiency to assess dissipative components. In this case, it is possible to define the efficiency of dissipative components without the introduction of negentropy flows. As case study, a Rankine cycle discussed in literature is selected. The dfferent approaches to evaluate dissipative components are applied and compared with the proposed one. Results show that with the proposed approach it is possible to evaluate dissipative components in isolation avoiding the incomistencies resulting from the use of negentropy flows in the assessment.

Tools to improve forecasting and control of the electricity consumption in hotels

Hotels are among the most energy intensive tourism facilities. To monitor and control the monthly and yearly energy consumption in hotels, different indicators have been proposed. These indicators, developed on yearly or annual basis, do not permit rapid detection and mitigation of malpractices and overconsumptions in hotel facilities. Moreover, these indicators do not consider the influence of physical parameters such as outdoor temperature, or, when they do, rather complex coefficients are used, precluding implementation in hotel facilities. This study discusses the use of Energy Performance Indicators to assess and control the electricity consumption in hotels. To this end a new indicator considering the outdoor temperature is introduced. Based on this indicator daily control graphs are developed, allowing a more rapid detection of overconsumptions and malpractices towards a higher electricity efficiency. One advantage of this approach is that no investments are required to implement it. The tools were implemented in two Cuban hotels of different characteristics, where reductions of the electricity consumption in 2014 compared to 2013 of 10 and 11%, were achieved.
