AbstractThe research consists of the determination of the Beach Quality Index (BQI) on three beaches in the Atlántico department in Colombia: Caño Dulce, Puerto Velero and Salgar. The BQI carries out an assessment of the state of the beach from the three most important functions offered by these ecosystems: The Recreational Function, The Natural Function and the Protection Function. For which three sub-indices are arranged. 1. The quality of the aspects that make up the recreational function of beaches such as the microbiological quality of water, comfort, saturation conditions, the aesthetic and hygienic quality of the beaches, the facilities and services provided, Activities that affect the enjoyment of the areas, the accesses and parking, the quality of the surroundings and the security in the beaches. The recreational Quality was determined by the Recreational Function Index (RFI). 2. The quality of the aspects that make up the natural function, which include the natural conditions of beaches such as the representativeness of flora species, vegetation cover and habitat development; Water and sand quality are also included from the level of pollution detected and the physical quality of the beach that determines the changes in certain physical components in the beaches due to the effects of anthropic activity. The Natural Quality was determined by the Natural Function Index (NFI). 3. The degree of protection offered by these areas, for which aspects such as the effective width of beach, which is the length between the infrastructure and the coastline, the extent of the storms and the minimum beach width required for Protect the infrastructure. Determined by the Protection Function Index (PFI). As a result of the application of the BQI in the three beaches of the Department of the Atlantic, it was found that the beach with the best valuation was Puerto Velero (BQI=0,56), Followed by Caño Dulce (BQI = 0,53) and the lowest value by Salgar beach (BQI = 0,24). Regarding the partial indexes, the highest value of RFI obtained Puerto Velero (0,52), while the value of NFI was equal to Puerto Velero and Caño Dulce (0,86) and the maximum value of PFI was obtained by Caño Dulce (0,39). Finally, the determination of the BQI allows beach managers and decision makers to have an input that represents the environmental quality of beaches, taking into account the three functions mentioned, to determine the management and management measures to be implemented in these valuable Areas.
