This research allowed determine the concentration of mercury in muscle tissue to five different fish imported and marketed in Barranquilla like: Bocachico Argentino (Prochilodus lineatus), Basa (Pangasius hypophthalmus), Bocachico Venezolano (Prochilodus reticulatus), which are marketed in fresh or frozen form and canned Sardina Van Premium Camp’s and Atún Medalla de Oro.This from 50 units of fish, taking 10 samples of muscle tissue from each species, which were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry with cold steam after acid digestion in the Laboratory of Toxicology and Environmental Management of the Universidad de Córdoba, giving way to estimate potential risk to human health Barranquillera that consume the mentioned species, in this studio it was shown that the highest concentrations of mercury were presented at the Tuna with an average value of 0.0911 ± 0.0181 g / g, and the lower concentration in Basa (Pangasius hypophthalmus) species with average 0.0185 ± 0.0073 g / g. The estimate of the potential risk indicated that methylmercury levels don’t generate negative effects to human health, since the weekly intake of mercury from Barranquilla population was under 1, bearing in mind that the maximum limit established by the JECFA is 1.6 µg/kg/week. However, it should be noted that all species tested had levels of mercury, a situation that deserves more attention in order to prevent a public health crisis by eating contaminated fish, because mercury may bioacumulate over time and generate a risk in the medium to long term.
