Considering the effect of wastewater discharges on local ecosystems, the efficiency of nutrients removal presents in municipal wastewater of the City of Barranquilla in a combined tertiary treatment system was evaluated. It was carried out through three phases, initially performing the analysis of the removal efficiency of coral rock and Chlorella sp. as isolated treatment systems in a Batch reactor with a fixed bed, the nutrients removals capacity was subsequently determined by implementing coral rock and Chlorella sp. in a tertiary treatment system combined with the reactor, the efficiency of the reactor was finally evaluated according to the maximum limits established in the national and international environmental regulations in terms of removal. It was evidenced that the modified coral rock at 400°C has better removal percentages during the first 5 h of treatment, while Chlorella sp. it has a better efficiency after 8 hours of treatment according to microbiological growth. By combining both means, removal percentages of 75% for NO2, 89% for NO3 and 34% for PO4 were obtained, after a time of 16 h, which is largely attributed to the action of the microalgae. It was concluded that the combined tertiary system has a high efficiency with respect to the individual systems, it has the highest removal percentages and accomplish with all current Environmental regulations.
