Flooding can often occur in many places due to the increasing trend of rainfall events (climate change), the urbanization process of a catchment area, or by an undersized urban channel. Reservoirs are used for limiting flooding since they can store an enough water volume. This research presents a practical procedure for sizing off-line reservoirs with an application in urban channels for places with space limitations. A complete formulation is presented, which can be easily used for designers and engineers for computing dimensions of off-line reservoirs. The formulation is applied to a case study located at the Cartagena de Indias, Colombia.

To reach the Sustainable Development Goals and delivering on the Paris Agreement on climate change mitigation, a Biomass on grid power system is proposed to supply 33,640 kWh/day, which is the average annual energy consumption from a group of office buildings. This study shows the behavior of the gas emission of a Biomass on Grid Energy System Using HOMER Pro Software, composed by two 500 kW biogas-powered electric generator, using different types of biomass resource from the Colombian Caribbean Region like manure obtained from the livestock sector and solid urban organic waste. The simulation results showed some emission decrease when operating on the grid the Biogas generator such as the carbon dioxide, the sulfur dioxide and the nitrogen oxides on 11.6% while the carbon monoxide increased on 8.7% concerning the power supply system through electrical grid coming from thermoelectric power plants and hydroelectric power plants

Está medido por el consumo de recursos y los residuos que genera, en consecuencia, tiene una alta responsabilidad en el contexto del cambio climático. Las acciones del sector de la construcción están consideradas dentro de las estrategias de adaptación y de mitigación al cambio climático, deben entonces sumarse a la búsqueda de la sostenibilidad y trabajar por la reducción de emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero para que el calentamiento global no supere +2°C. El siguiente artículo tiene como objeto reflexionar sobre la responsabilidad del quehacer de la arquitectura en relación con las estrategias de producción limpia a implementarse con el fin de mitigar sus efectos y afectaciones frente al cambio climático.

Currently, various investigations address reforestation’s importance as an essential component in the restoration of ecosystems, by identifying the possible use of this type of project for Carbon Markets also called Emissions Trading. The present study sought, through the application of statistical methodologies and GIS tools, the delimitation of areas in the Colombian Caribbean Region with a High, Medium, or Low potential, for the design and implementation of projects for the reduction and commercialization of GHG emissions, through of reforestation with a percentage of native species that ensures the balance of the most vulnerable ecosystems in the region. By using secondary information obtained from official public or private sources, a documentary and spatial analysis was carried out, which had as a first step the selection of the Caribbean region as the study object, requiring relevant physical information for research such as climatology, hydrology, and ecosystems. Subsequently, the statistical method of the Saaty Matrix was applied, for the weighting of the geographical layers previously delimited to the region and categorized each according to the High, Medium, or Low ranges. Thus, generating a final map with the possible areas from highest to lowest potential for projects that can enter the CM through reforestation. As a result, its have that the Caribbean in its almost total extension has a Medium potential for the execution of this type of projects, due to its unique characteristics at a geographical level, due to its interconnection with Mar and Rio, and its socio-economic conditions that promote development and investment in the region. The present study can be considered as a baseline in this field, since, for a more precise classification of the region, it is recommended to update the geographic information provided, taking specific in -site samples, and prepare better financial projections for the projects.

Se evaluó cual podría ser la tendencia y la afectación en los caudales de entrada hasta el año 2100 del embalse que se tiene proyectado sobre el Río Frío para el abastecimiento de los municipios de Chía, Tenjo, Tabio, Cota y Cajicá considerando el RCP 4.5 y 8.5, los cuales describen dos caminos del forzamiento radiativo hasta el año 2100. Estos tuvieron en cuenta las series asociadas a las simulaciones realizadas en los modelos climáticos globales CCSM4, IPSL CM5A –LR y MIROC ESM y los RCP. Se realizaron análisis comparativos para saber si las demandas proyectadas hasta el año 2070 podrán cumplirse al considerar el cambio climático. Se puso en evidencia que las demandas estimadas son elevadas y tienen un crecimiento exponencial, mientras que la oferta que se estimó tiene valores pequeños que no son suficientes para satisfacer los requerimientos de abastecimiento. Los caudales de entrada se esperan que tengan disminuciones de aproximadamente un 20%.

This study was proposed for evaluating the CO2 fixation by Spirulina platensis in different media, in order to understand the growth dynamics of the photosynthetic microalgae, a useful resource for the mitigation of climate change. The percentage of CO2 fixation by the strain S. platensis UTEX LB 2340 was determined during 11 days of sampling, using four (4) culture media. According to the statistical models, spirulina medium represented the best option in terms of cell growth between the tested ones. In this model, the variable day had presented a significant difference, this could be related to the exponential phase of the microorganism used.

This work quantifies the evolution in the implementation and development of renewable energies in Colombia, as well as evidence the current challenges and development prospects. The high demand for electricity in Colombia is increasing due to the great increase in population, industry and commerce, which generates greater energy consumption and as a consequence economic, social and environmental problems. The objective of this study was to analyze the behavior of the energy projects submitted to the Mining Energy Planning Group (UPME) during the last 15 years until July 2022, as well as to study the research areas with the highest performance. technology and the corresponding radiation intensity. In addition, it shows an historic information about the projects presented both not in force as of the date of closing of this investigation, classified according to their source, according to their range of power and according to its stage of implementation, finally, we made a synthesis of the new regulations governing the motivation and implementation of projects with renewable energy sources, being as this work a very good source of reference for further studies of the implementation of renewable energy sources in Colombia.

"El Cambio Climático aumenta la vulnerabilidad de las poblaciones asentadas en litorales y también la de los estuarios, especialmente los ecosistemas de manglar. Estos últimos sufren a menudo el impacto de la urbanización informal, especialmente presente en los países en vía de desarrollo. A partir de esto, nace la necesidad de idear nuevas tecnologías, que más allá de generar cero emisiones, busquen generar un impacto +1; es decir, capaz de revertir, optimizar y asegurar la dinámica del Estuario y de la población aledaña. Se requiere entonces trabajar en dinámicas productivas que permitan a las comunidades y la naturaleza convivir de una manera positiva. Tres problemáticas que se retroalimentan se identificaron en estas zonas geográficas. En primer lugar, la carencia de oportunidades de crecimiento económico de la población. En segundo lugar, incompatibilidad en los usos del suelo, agravado por violaciones del trazado urbano, carencia de sistemas sanitarios, y otros problemas ligados al Urbanismo Espontaneo. Finalmente, la confluencia de las dos problemáticas anteriores da origen a una tercera: la degradación ambiental, social y paisajista del estuario. Teniendo esto como punto de partida, se propone un prototipo de intervención urbano-arquitectónico a partir de mecanismos biotecnológicos pasivos sustentados en el estudio biomimético del Estuario. Según el análisis de la dinámica del estuario, se logró identificar el mangle como eje central del ecosistema. La abstracción de sus características esenciales dio origen al dispositivo ELEOS, un mecanismo de carácter modular, capaz de intervenir el acuífero y que, funcionando como un ente catalizador, logra restaurar y perpetuar el desarrollo del ecosistema mediante tres ejes de intervención: 1. Sociocultural: basado en la integración social de la población en un proceso de Desarrollo Urbano Sostenible, brindando espacios lúdicos y reflexivos; 2. Ecoturístico: capaz de exaltar la biodiversidad, abriendo la puerta a la oferta económica, resaltando la estética del ecosistema, sin invadir el paisaje y mimetizándose con él; 3. Pedagógico: a través de espacios para la enseñanza y aprendizaje sobre el mantenimiento, el respeto e importancia de los recursos hídricos y como impactamos en ellos."

The effects of climate change have led to reduces fossil fuel in vehicle, developing new technologies such as the electric vehicles. The research presents an identification of barriers and inhibitors according to international experiences, an evaluation with the MICMAC method and the identification of key factors to achieve development of electric vehicles in Colombia. The results allow to identify the elements of high influence, which may guide intervention strategies and be the basis for the formulation of guidelines and policies. The results conclude that the business models for the purchase and sale of energy are the catalyst for the encouraging of the stakeholders, the improvement of the distribution network and the management of the electricity market.

Social perception of coastal risk in the face of hurricanes in the southeastern region of Cuba

This article aims to determine the level of social perception of coastal risk (SPCR) of the population in the face of hurricanes in the southeastern region of Cuba. Semi-structured interviews to inhabitants of the coastal municipalities’ object of study were carried out, with the purpose of collecting data for assessing the following aspects: SPCR when facing hurricanes; causes leading to High, Medium or Low SPCR; sources of information; levels of knowledge about coastal legal issues; levels of responsibility concerning risk management actions, and measures suggested to increase SPCR in the case of hurricanes. A group of 568 people were interviewed. Types of structural, non-structural and ecological vulnerabilities after the impact of hurricanes were also identified, as well as the socio-economic, socio-psychological, communicational, organizational, natural and socio-political factors that influenced their perception of risk. The results showed medium and low levels of SPCR in the population studied. The research concludes with the proposal of some coastal protection actions to be considered in the Plan to Face Climate Change in the Republic of Cuba.

The impact of long-term changes in air temperature on renewable energy in poland

This paper analysed from the statistical point of view the trends in observed air temperature in major Polish cities and presented a qualitative analysis of their potential impact on the operation of the selected renewable energy sources. It also reviews the relation between the air temperature and observed electrical load as well as changing numbers of cooling and heating degree days. The method involved a statistical analysis of historical mean daily temperature observed in 19 major Polish cities over the 1968–2018 period. The air temperature change impact on renewable energy sector in Poland, by affecting the heating and cooling demand, the electrical load and the renewables working conditions both, on supply and demand side. The analysis reports that the mean daily temperature in all major polish cities is exhibiting a statistically significant increasing trend, up to 0.52 °C/decade. The observed increase in air temperature reduces the heating demand in Poland, beneficially for the environment and renewable supply. Increasing cooling needs in summer raises the energy consumption and indoor thermal stress. The climate warming affects the operation conditions, energy source, driving force, capacity and efficiency of renewable energy sources. The investigated changes were favourable and unfavourable depending on the renewable technology and operation mode, and were stronger on the demand side than on the supply side.
