In this paper, a predictive tool for the energy consumption of wheat milling process using multiple linear regression and a new energy performance indicator (EnPI) is proposed. This EnPI does not only consider the production of flour but also the particle size of flour and added water for softening wheat. The results of the study, carried out in a wheat mill plant in Cuba, show a good coincidence between the predicted and real energy consumption for the developed model. It also demonstrates the effectiveness of EnPI proposed as a tool for management and energy savings in the company under study. Due to the complexity of the proposed model, for obtaining the baseline and estimating the energy saving potential, a probabilistic method was used. It was statistically demonstrated by the determination index (R2), that the new proposed model is superior to the conventional model of energy versus production.

Currently, the feasibility to replace standard efficiency electric motors with higher efficiency ones is assessed with considerations differing from real operating conditions in the industry. This study compares the feasibility of replacing 26 standard efficiency motors (IE1) with high-efficiency efficiency ones (IE2 and IE3) in a sugar plant, based on three different energy scenarios and considering the incremental costs or depreciated costs of motors. Energy scenario 1 consider that motors operate for 6000 h/year at full load and nominal efficiency. While scenarios 2 and 3 consider the measured operating time and the load factor of motors. The results show that scenario 1 overestimates electricity consumption between 2 and 18 times, contrasted with a difference of 1e7% in scenarios 2 and 3, leading to saving potentials in scenario 1 between 1.2 and 33.4 times higher than for scenarios 2 and 3. Considering the incremental costs in scenario 1, it is feasibly to replace all the motors in the plant, while it is only feasibly to replace three motors in scenarios 2 and 3 with the depreciated costs. Therefore, the use of scenario 1 based on unrealistic conditions and leading to economic loss, should be avoided in future studies.

Different methods have been developed to estimate the energy efficiency of induction motors. The accuracy of these methods vary with the load factor, the unbalanced voltage (UV) and harmonics. The feasibility of these methods for efficiency estimation in real-time were theoretically and experimentally assessed during the operation under different operational conditions (i.e. balanced sinusoidal voltage (BSV), harmonics, UV and harmonics with UV). Results show that for load factors over 80%, the air-gap method is applicable under any condition, while the slip method is only applicable under BSV or balanced harmonic voltage. Moreover, for load factors over 40%, the nameplate method is applicable under BSV. Other methods result in errors over 8% and optimization methods are not applicable for real-time monitoring. Electric systems generally operates with some degree of UV and harmonics, while induction motors mostly operate with load factors below 60%, limiting the use of these methods for real-time measurement.

Nowadays, microgrids (MGs) play a crucial role in modern power systems due to possibility of integrating renewable energies into grid-connected or islanded power systems. The Load Frequency Control (LFC) is an issue of paramount importance to ensure MGs reliable and safe operation. Specifically, in AC MGs, primary frequency control of each energy source can be guaranteed in order to integrate other energy sources. This paper proposes a micro-hydro frequency control scheme, combining the control of a reduced dump load and the nozzle flow control of Pelton turbines operating in autonomous regime. Some works have reported the integration of dump load and flow control methods, but they did not reduce the dump load value and adjust the nozzle flow linearly to the power value demanded by users, causing the inefficient use of water. Simulation results were obtained in Matlab®/Simulink® using models obtained from previous research and proven by means of experimental studies. The simulation of the proposed scheme shows that the frequency control in this plant is done in correspondence with the Cuban NC62-04 norm of power energy quality. In addition, it is possible to increase energy efficiency by reducing the value of the resistive dump load by up to 7.5% in a case study. The validation result shows a 60% reduction of overshoot and settling time of frequency temporal behavior of the autonomous micro-hydro.

Este estudio compara el comportamiento del consumo energético para dos tecnologías diferentes de climatización al interior del laboratorio de Máquinas Eléctricas de la Universidad de la Costa CUC. Durante el desarrollo de esta investigación se caracterizó el recinto y se identificaron los equipos con consumo significativo, destacándose el sistema de climatización como el de mayor consumo de energía. Teniendo en cuenta lo anterior, se realizó una comparación del consumo energético entre el sistema de climatización (tipo mini Split) con un sistema de volumen de refrigerante variable (VRF), considerando las mismas condiciones de carga interna y externas asociadas al estudio deedificaciones educativas. Esta comparación se llevó a cabo realizando mediciones de potencia eléctrica activa y consumo de energía del sistema actual durante un período de una semana típica de operación. Estos resultados se compararon por medio del modelamiento y simulación dinámica del desempeño energético del recinto, mediante el empleo del software EnergyPlus (E+) como herramienta predictiva y con asignación de la tecnología de acondicionamiento de aire tipo VRF. Los resultados de esta simulación evidenciaron el potencial de ahorro del 30% ante esta variación tecnológica.

The data presented in this article was used to assess and compare the most important methods used to estimate the efficiency during the operation of induction motors at different loads and power supply conditions. The experiment was developed in a test bench including a three-phase induction motor of 1.1 kW (De Lorenzo DL 1021). In addition, an adjustable voltage source, a variable-frequency drive, a resistor, and a magnetic powder brake control unit to regulate the load were used during the experiments. A power quality and energy analyzer (Fluke 435 series 6) was used to measure the electric variables during the experiments. Moreover, for the mechanical measures, the sensors of the brake control unit (De Lorenzo DL 1054TT) and a magnetic powder brake (De Lorenzo DL 1019P) were used. In total, 11 load factors were measured at different operation conditions, including balanced sinusoidal voltage, balanced harmonic voltage, unbalanced sinusoidal voltage and unbalanced harmonic voltage. A total of 10 measures were taken for each load factor at each operation condition. The data presented in this paper can be useful in the development and evaluation of new efficiency estimation methods for induction motors, considering different operation conditions and load factors. Moreover, it can serve to assess the impact of the energy quality on the efficiency of induction motors. The results of the study yielded the pertinent information to establish the Pareto of the equipment and / or systems with the greatest significant use of electricity, with this it was possible to obtain the company's performance indicator and in addition, correlation values greater than R2 = 60% were achieved. In the development of the research, it is determined with accuracy and evidence which is the main consumer of electric energy of the company and it is specified where all efforts should be directed to reduce the consumption of electric energy and clearly shows the result of efficiency of the energy management system implemented.

This paper presents the mechanical design of a single axis solar tracking system, as well as the electronic design of a system that to record in real time the electric power delivered by the solar tracker and to evaluate its performance. The interface was developed in Labview and it compares the power supplied by the tracker with the power supplied by static solar panel of the same characteristics. The performance is initially simulated using Pv-Syst software, and later validated with the data obtained by the interface. As a result, the use of the solar tracker increases the power delivered by a minimum of 19%, and it can go as high as 47.84%, with an average in increase in power of 19.5% in the monthly energy production. This experimental result was compared with the simulation by Pv-Syst software and shows a difference of only 2.5%, thus validating the reliability of the simulation. This behavior pattern coincides with previous studies carried out for equatorial latitudes.

La caracterización energética y la calidad de la energía eléctrica son dos herramientas de diagnóstico de fundamental importancia para determinar el estado de la eficiencia energética en una compañía como tal, donde se tiene en cuenta cada uno de los equipos y líneas de procesos, además de los históricos de consumo de energía eléctrica junto con los datos de las toneladas entregadas en planta, encontrando diferentes potenciales de ahorro, por medio de la reducción de la energía no asociada a la producción (ENAP), reducción del consumo por gestión operacional y por gestión de la producción y por ultimo reducción en el consumo de energía eléctrica por gestión del mantenimiento. Adicionalmente también se tiene en cuenta el comportamiento de los indicadores para el cumplimiento de la meta de energía eléctrica, esto con el fin de verificar cual es el criterio tenido en cuenta para la elaboración del mismo, seguidamente se analizan y se recomiendan nuevos indicadores, basados en la eficiencia energética de los equipos que diariamente intervienen en el proceso productivo, ajustando la planeación de las toneladas a producir de acuerdo a esta condición. Con el fin de determinar la calidad de la energía eléctrica por medio de la norma IEEE 519 – 1992, donde se plantean los límites de distorsión armónica se creó un software que nos permite verificar si la empresa Alimentos Cárnicos S.A.S., este cumplimiento con todos los requerimientos de esta normatividad, además esta herramienta nos permite identificar cual es el factor de carga de los transformadores de alimentación.

Energy efficiency is a concept focused on the conscious and optimized use of electrical energy. It has been evaluated as a sustainable alternative to reduce environmental problems that are generated for energy production. In this work, an electrical energy supervision system is proposed, controlling the loads through a network of sensors and generating a report with the estimated energy consumption using a raspberry pi. The result of this work was the development of a system where the user enters an approximate value of his invoice and the system shows the appropriate hours of use of each appliance; For this, the system calculates how much should be consumed in order to reach the stipulated amount, taking into account the prioritization of some devices according to their frequency of use and the use of a fixed consumption table in which the electrical appliances are entered. The use of the developed device must be complemented with a culture of rational use of energy and a cable network in optimal condition.

The “equivalent battery production” is introduced to define the energy performance criteria to be met in the different production sections of the battery plant. The methodology combines the guidelines of the ISO 50001 standard with the energy management framework for manufacturing plants. The result is a structured approach for detecting inefficiencies and pinpointing their sources. The management methodology was implemented during 2016. In the formation area 222 MWh were saved during 2016. This saving accounts for 3.9% less electricity than forecasted by the energy baseline of the area. Additionally, the emission of some 40 tCO2.eq. associated with the generation of the electricity production were saved. Moreover, at plant level 424 MWh were saved, which account for 3.6% less electricity than forecasted by the energy baseline of the plant. In total, around 76 tCO2.eq. were saved as a result of the electricity savings in the plant.

The use of compressed air in industry is an important and yet overlooked energy carrier. Although there are different energy-saving measures discussed in the specialized literature, there is little discussion on the energy performance of the production and use of compressed air. This study developed a new approach to assess the energy performance of compressed air systems based on a six-step local energy benchmarking methodology. The methodology includes an energy management procedure to monitor and control the electricity consumption and sustain the energy performance of compressed air systems in time. The procedure monitors the production and use of compressed at plant and at manufacturing section levels based on the real-time monitoring of relevant variables to calculate energy performance indicators, energy baselines, and CUSUM charts. Monitoring the consumption of compressed air at the section level in a case study reduced the demand between 11 and 47%. While electricity consumption to produce compressed air at the plant level reduced by an estimated 23%. This approach permits the rapid detection of inefficiencies in the production and demand sides of the compressed air system, highlighting inefficiencies that are frequently hidden in the total electricity consumption of manufacturing plants

Energy saving measures, in the design air conditioning systems, are crucial in the development of energy schemes with rational energy consumption. Traditionally, integrated buildings systems have been assessed individually to optimize the energy performance, however they have different parameters that affect energy performance that demands the use of detailed analysis using dynamic simulation. This paper is focused on compare an air conditioning system to be implemented in educational buildings in warm-climate, considering energy schemes provide for a constant air volume (CAV) flow system with a water chiller, while the other integrates a variable refrigerant flow (VRF) system. Adding in each case dedicated outdoor air System (DOAS) units. Energy consumption achieved by each AC system is obtained considering the configuration achieving energy savings of 40% of the annual electricity demand for cooling. Finally, the use of DOAS represents an increase of 20% of total electricity consumption.

The aim of this study is to improve energy performance at a battery factory in Colombia by introducing the energy management approach defined in ISO 50001. In the study, the main energy consumptions were identified in the battery formation, the compressed air system and the large electric motors. An energy review was performed in the factory using measurement equipment and statistical techniques. Different actions were proposed to improve energy performance. As a result, a 3.48% reduction in electricity consumption was achieved during the implementation of the proposed measures.

This article presents the results of energy planning in a hotel in the city of Barranquilla, Colombia, according to ISO 500001 standard methodology. The energy performance of the hotel was assessed, a low capacity for energy management was found and the main electricity consumers were identified and several energy-saving measures associated to bedrooms management and air conditioner operation were proposed and implemented reaching a 19,3 % of energy-saving. Compressed air is one of the most widely used application energies in the industry, such as good transportability, safety, purity, cleanliness, storage capacity and ease of use. In many countries, compressed air systems account for approximately 10% of the industry’s total electricity consumption. Despite all its advantages, compressed air is expensive, only between 10% and 30% of the energy consumed reaches the point of final use. Energy is lost as heat, leaks, pressure drop, misuse, among others. Energy efficiency measures such as: reducing compressor pressure, lowering air inlet temperature, adequate storage capacity, recovering residual heat from the air compressor and reducing leakage, can produce energy savings between 20% and 60%, with an average return on investment lower than 2 years. This paper analyzes the main energy efficiency measures that can be applied in the CASs, the potential energy savings, implementation costs and return rate of each of them are being calculated giving a necessary tool for companies in their objectives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption.

It is generally agreed that solar energy, which can be converted into usable electricity by means of solar panels, is one of the most important renewable energy sources. An energy and exergy study of these panels is the first step in developing this technology. This will provide a fair standard by which solar panel efficiency can be evaluated. In this study, the MATLAB tool was used to find the answers to the math problems that describe this system. The system’s efficiency has been calculated using the modeled data created in MATLAB. When solving equations, the initial value of the independent system parameters is fed into the computer in accordance with the algorithm of the program. A simulation and a parametric analysis of a thermal PV system with a sheet and spiral tube configuration have been completed. Simulations based on a numerical model have been run to determine where precisely the sheet and helical tubes should be placed in a PV/T system configured for cold water. Since then, the MATLAB code for the proposed model has been developed, and it agrees well with the experimental data. There is an RMSE of 0.94 for this model. The results indicate that the modeled sample achieves a thermal efficiency of between 43% and 52% and an electrical efficiency of between 11% and 11.5%.
