With an increasing number of individuals recovering from severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection, there is an urgent need to study the medium- and long-term consequences of the disease. Growing evidence suggests that some patients exhibit symptoms such as fatigue, “brain fog,” or cognitive complaints after the acute infection stage, commonly referred to as “Long COVID.”1 A 6-month study using multidimensional data from the medical records of 73,435 coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients showed that, after the first 30 days of illness, individuals have an increased risk of death, higher health resource utilization, and an increased burden from neurocognitive disorders.1 Indeed, evidence from previous epidemics shows that subsequent neurological and, particularly, cognitive complications can occur, such as in the severe influenza epidemic from 1918 to 1921 (also known as the Spanish flu).2 More recently, cases of encephalitis, sensory impairment, coma, and severe neurological damage were reported during the Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) outbreak in 20123 and vascular or inflammatory damage of the brain and central nervous system in people affected by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV) outbreak in 2003.4 Cognitive dysfunction has a significant impact on functionality and quality of life.5 Given the high incidence of COVID-19 and the associated economic, health, and social burden of the epidemic, studying its occurrence and underlying mechanisms is crucial. In the current systematic review, we assess whether there is an increased occurrence of cognitive deficits in adult patients with COVID-19 who previously had no cognitive impairment.

Executive functions are a set of psychological processes that are necessary for the cognitive control of behavior: selecting and successfully monitoring behaviors that facilitate the attainment of certain goals. These skills are necessary to guide learning of new information. Core executive function (CEF) are inhibitory control, working memory and cognitive flexibility. They regulate and control other skills and behaviors, and also have influence on more basic skills such as attention, memory systems, and praxis. Executive functions allow setting goals and carrying them out through planning and monitoring, keeping inhibited thoughts, behaviors and emotions that interfere. This research consists of determining neuropsychological EF profiles in different clinical populations evaluated with tablet-based test. Two batteries developed by CEDETI UC were applied: Yellow Red and TENI (Infant Neuropsychological Assessment Test). The sample consists of 175 argentine children, between 7 and 12 years old, divided in two groups, clinical and control. The obtained scores show the importance of distinguishing profiles between these three CEF within the clinical population comparing with a typical developing group. The overall index obtained differentiates the groups best. Children with dyscalculia, autistic spectrum disorder and borderline intellectual disability obtain significantly lower scores having greater difficulties in EF.

However, until now, studies that take into account both the cognitive elements and the characteristics of the stimuli when making a decision are unknown. Objective: The purpose of this research was to determine the influence of advertising stimuli with sexual content in decision making, taking into account neuropsychological variables such as executive functioning and. experimental conditions such as the order in which the stimuli are presented. Methods: A quasi-experimental study was carried out, with a sample of 60 subjects, of male gender and aged between 18 and 35 years of age, with normal and low executive functions (measured through validated neuropsychological protocols), whom were showed an advertisement with and without sexual stimuli, presented in different order. Subsequently, a preference survey of the stimuli was carried out. Results: The results show the influence of the stimulus with sexual content on decision making in men with executive functioning below what was expected, when they observe first the stimulus without sexual content and then the stimulus with sexual content. Conclusion: This suggests the influence of executive functions (including working memory) in decision making, when stimuli with sexual content are involved

Functional impairment (FI) relates to the condition of executive functions (EFs). While EFs become affected by age and educational level (EL). Seniors suffering from depression (SSDs) on the other hand show EF-related deficiencies; however, there is hardly any literature available regarding their relationship with FI in Latin SSDs, who usually have low ELs. Objective: To verify the relationship between EFs and FI in SSDs of Latin origins, by controlling the effects associated with age and educational level. Methodology: Cross-sectional study, of cases and controls, conducted on a nonprobability sample, made up of 102 self-sufficient SSDs and 142 control subjects over age 50, monolinguals of Latin origin (Chileans), all assessed by means of a battery of assessments such as: Geriatric Depression Scale, Addenbrook's Cognitive Assessment III, Trail making Tests A and B, STROOP word-color test, and semantic and phonological verbal fluency tests. A domain of composite EFs was established with standardized Chilean population scores, where age and educational levels were controlled. A simple linear regression analysis was conducted to determine the relationship between EFs and FI in SSDs. Results: Upon controlling age and educational levels, EFs explained an FI variance of 3.9% in SSDs; depression explained an EF variance of 3.2%, and 3.7% of FI. Conclusion: The results of the present study highlight the importance of a timely intervention when it comes to geriatric depression, considering the negative effect it has over the executive functions and the functionality of seniors.

Introduction. The Executive Functions (EF) are a set of supramodal functions that favor cognitive, emotional and social skills. In early childhood, EFs influence the performance of academic skills. The present research determined the relationship between executive functions and academic performance in an educational context. Method. A correlational study was conducted involving 195 students between 6 and 12 years of age, randomly selected from primary grades (from 1 to 5). The executive functions measured were: verbal fluency (phonological and semantic), selective attention, cognitive flexibility, planning and inhibition; for which, the Neuropsychological Evaluation of the executive functions in children (ENFEN) was used and the academic performance was evaluated from the cumulative academic average in the year. Results. According to Spearman's correlation analysis, the results show that there is a statistically significant relationship between academic performance and the components of executive functions: phonological fluency (p = .01) and cognitive flexibility (p = .01). On the other hand, the logistic regression showed that semantic fluency and inhibition are predictive factors for academic performance in 76.4%. Discussion or Conclusion. Which suggests that executive functions are associated and in turn predict academic performance in elementary school students, especially if this is low.

This research was oriented to determine if there are differences in the performance of executive functions in children that legitimize and do not legitimize the use of violence when facing simulated conflicts. An explanatory study was carried out with a 2 x 4 factorial design. The Student's t-test was used for the analysis. The sample consisted of 130 children (80 boys and 50 girls), between 8 and 12 years old, public school students from the municipality of Soledad. For the evaluation of executive functions, the Children's Neuropsychological Evaluation Battery ENI was used, subtests of executive functions and the Posner task was administered for the inhibitory control measure. The legitimation of the violence was evaluated through the video game Leyendas de Almar. The main results pointed out that there is no statistically significant relationship in the performance of executive functions of children who agree with those who do not agree to face conflicts. However, in some subcomponents of executive functions performance was slightly higher in children who responded aggressively compared to those who did not. It is concluded that, although the executive functions mediate the willingness to justify the use of violence, the way of dealing with conflicts does not depend exclusively on a special performance of these functions. However, there are environmental variables that may influence decision making in everyday conflict situations.

El Bullying es un fenómeno social contemporáneo que impacta en múltiples estructuras y contextos sociales. Este estudio tuvo como objetivo establecer la asociación entre funciones ejecutivas (FE), cognición social en adolescentes y el bullying. Estudio descriptivo transversal con una muestra de 109 sujetos seleccionados mediante un muestreo por conveniencia. Se realizó una regresión logística multinomial, encontrando que la cognición social es un factor protector (OR: .17 IC 95% .05-.59) (OR: .27 IC 95% .08- .85) en el grupo de los agresores respecto a los controles; así como en el grupo de víctimas respecto a los controles (OR: .15 IC 95% .05 – .42) (OR: .30 IC 95% (.11- .82). De esta manera, una adecuada cognición social se asocia como un factor protector ante el bullying y el presentar déficits en las FE se asocia a un incremento del riesgo de tres veces de padecerlo.

Abstract (Resumen en inglés) This research has the objective to examine the relationship between executive functions, family functionality and behavioral mismatch with social cognition in students from 7th to 10th grade in a situation of bullying. It was carried out under the empirical-analytical paradigm, which is carried out through an ex post facto type design with a retrospective concurrence of a single measure, of transverse measurement. The sample consisted of 101 students aged between 11 and 17 years old. The techniques and instruments were a semi-structured interview for parents, a complete neuropsychological evaluation protocol to evaluate executive functions and the elements of social cognition (Theory of Mind and Social Perception), Family APGAR to evaluate the functional status of the family, Multimodal Scale of Behavior to evaluate clinical and adaptive indicators of behavior and personality that are considered anomalous and the “Ombudsman” bullying scale. In the results obtained, it was found that the statistically significant correlations between the Executive Functions (information processing speed, inhibitory control and working memory p < 0.05) and inversely proportional to the Misconduct of the Behavior (Attitude towards the Teachers) are found associated with the Theory of Mind (Social Cognition). Family functionality perceived by parents and social cognition variables are not correlated. Therefore, it is concluded that the executive functions and behavior mismatches are associated with the Theory of Mind (Ability to empathize and make inferences of basic and complex mental states), however, for the family functionality variable were not found any correlation.

Con el aumento del interés de la neurociencia y su importancia en cuanto a la comprensión de la forma en que las habilidades cognitivas se desarrollan, especialmente las funciones ejecutivas en un individuo, una nueva forma de estudiar la relación entre los procesos de enseñanza y aprendizaje en el aula desde la perspectiva de la psicología ha surgido. Las funciones ejecutivas se pueden definir, de acuerdo con Portellano (2009), como un conjunto de habilidades cognitivas superiores que permiten la adaptación a un medio social. The purpose of this study was to design, implement and evaluate the effect of an intervention program in executive functions to promote the citizenship skills of elementary school students. The research was quasi-experimental with pre and post measurement of "k" intact groups and double randomly assigned. The sample consisted of 392 students from two public schools in the cities of Barranquilla and Bogotá from first to fifth grade randomly distributed into two groups: Experimental (n = 197) and Control (n = 195). For the evaluation of citizenship competencies, Moral Dilemmas Instrument was used, and for the intervention, the FeJINCOC program, was used, validated by expert judges with a Cronbach's Alpha of 0.98. The results obtained from the students show significant changes (McNemar <.000) toward the development of their citizenship skills in a cognitive manner in order to recognize the effect of one's behavior on others compared to the control group.

Fibromyalgia (FMS) is a chronic condition that encompasses widespread pain associated with cognitive impairment and significant emotional distress related to functional disability. This study aimed to obtain evidence of the role of pain in the effect of time since FMS diagnosis and cognitive performance using a novel online protocol of neuropsychological evaluation since the COVID-19 pandemic has challenged traditional neuropsychology testing leading to the need for novel procedures transitioning to tele-neuropsychology. A sample of 70 adult women was evaluated (50 with FMS and 19 controls) using online questionnaires that evaluated pain and executive functioning (impulsivity, inhibition control, monitoring, and planning). Afterward, participants were evaluated by trained neuropsychologists in a 30 min online session using virtually adapted cognitive tests: the Hopkins Verbal Learning Test (memory), the Symbol-Digit Modalities Test (attention and speed processing), the F-A-S test (verbal fluency), and Digit Span tests (working memory). We found that the time of FMS diagnosis has an effect on cognitive functioning predominantly mediated by pain. Our results point out the role of pain as a mediator on cognitive performance, specifically in executive functions which are directly affected by the cumulative effect of the time of diagnosis. Furthermore, the importance of considering a broader perspective for assessment and treatment including novel procedures via tele-neuropsychology.

The objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) is a method for assessment clinical competencies and skills. However, there is a need to improve its design in psychology programs. The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of the different scenario’s presentation order with different complexity/difficulty on the autonomic stress response of undergraduate students undergoing a Psychology OSCE. A total of 32 students of Psychology Bachelor’s Degree (23.4 ± 2.5 years) were randomly selected and assigned to two OSCE scenarios of different complexity. While undergoing the scenarios, participants heart rate variability was analyzed as an indicator of participant’s stress autonomic response. Results indicate that the order of presentation of different complexity/difficulty scenarios affects the autonomic stress response of undergraduate Psychology students undergoing an OSCE. Students who underwent the high-complexity scenario (difficult) first, reported significantly higher autonomic stress response than students who began the OSCE with the low-complexity scenario (easy). Highly complex or difficult scenarios require good executive functions or cognitive control, very sensitive to autonomic stress responses. Therefore, OSCE design will benefit from placing easy scenarios first.

The study was developed from the analytical empirical paradigm, of instrumental type, the evaluation was carried out by 14 judges, experts in the areas of Executive Functions, Citizen Competences and Research Methodology. The specifications, the design of the components were formulated and the corresponding parameters were established for the functional evaluation of the program. Achieving a level of reliability through Cronbach's Alpha, from .80 to .90 equivalent to good and excellent criteria. Being pertinent for a future piloting in children of basic primary.
