The islands of Providencia and Santa Catalina are located in the Colombian Caribbean Sea and are highly representative of their biodiversity, coral reef and mangrove ecosystems. They are situated within the Seaflower Biosphere Reserve. This study aims to understand the distribution and quantities of marine litter on the beaches and mangroves of the islands, as well as the impacts of currents from Hurricane Iota. 32 points were used as reference, including mangroves, beaches (touristic and non-touristic/sand and gravel) and post-beach areas with vegetation. The investigation of marine litter followed established international protocols and quantified the waste in items per square meter. The results show that the tourist beaches remain in better condition than the non-tourist ones, resulting from human intervention framed in the use of the beach and the final disposal of waste. On the other hand, the passage of Hurricane Iota significantly altered the distribution of marine litter in some areas, with an increase of waste on touristic beaches (sand) and a decrease in post-beach areas with vegetation and mangroves. An increase in the number of marine litter items on touristic sandy beaches occurred due to the arrival of marine litter through coastal dynamics and the redistribution of marine litter present in the post-beach area. The mangrove sector showed a reduction in the number of marine litter items, which may be linked to factors such as vegetation degradation and possible redistribution of marine litter present due to coastal/marine dynamics and cleaning actions during the recovery processes of this ecosystem post-emergency. In the near future, an increase in the frequency and strength of extreme weather events is predicted, as well as an increase in the amount of plastic waste ending up in the sea. Therefore, continuous and long-term research is necessary.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; El propósito del presente estudio fue desarrollar estrategias agrícolas en busca de mejorar el proceso de crecimiento del Mangle y otras especies nativas para repoblar la ciénaga Carrillo y lograr la implementación de un vivero. Esta propuesta busca contribuir a la conservación del medio ambiente, a través de la educación poblacional, y el manejo adecuado de los recursos naturales. &nbsp;Se trabajó la investigación desde la mirada cualitativa, empleando como técnica de recolección la entrevista estructurada, y la observación participante. La población participante fue la comunidad educativa de san Sebastián Magdalena. Como conclusiones se infiere que los participantes reconocen la necesidad de repoblar la ciénaga de carillo y por tal motivo se encuentran en la fase diagnóstico y adecuación de recursos para la clasificación de especies e implementar el vivero.

Colombia has approximately 379,954 hectares of mangrove forests distributed along the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea coasts. Such forests are experiencing the highest annual rate of loss recorded in South America and, in the last three decades, approximately 40,000 hectares have been greatly affected by natural and, especially, human impacts. This study determined, by the use of Landsat multispectral satellite images, the evolution of three mangrove forests located in the Colombian Caribbean Sea: Malloquín, Totumo, and La Virgen swamps. Mangrove forest at Mallorquín Swamp recorded a loss of 15 ha in the period of 1985–2018, associated with alterations in forest hydrology, illegal logging, urban growth, and coastal erosion. Totumo Swamp lost 301 ha in the period 1985–2018 associated with changes in hydrological conditions, illegal logging, and increased agricultural and livestock uses. La Virgen Swamp presented a loss of 31 ha in the period of 2013–2018 that was linked to the construction of a roadway, alterations of hydrological conditions, illegal logging, and soil urbanization, mainly for tourist purposes. Although Colombian legislation has made efforts to protect mangrove ecosystems, human activities are the main cause of mangrove degradation, and thus it is mandatory for the local population to understand the value of the ecosystem services provided by mangroves.

The project to plant mangrove seeds and nodes in the swamp is based on the study of mangrove forests. Its objective is to reproduce native mangroves by means of seeds and nodes in nurseries to repopulate the banks of the La Rinconada swamp at La Pacha, Magdalena, and to use it as a pedagogical tool on the conservation of water resources and wildlife once the plants have reached an adequate stage of development. The study was approached from a qualitative perspective. The instrument used in the initial stage was a structured interview performed with students at the La Pacha School. The main conclusion is that the student community is aware of the benefits that mangroves offer to biodiversity, and the main task ahead is to get them involved in the process and motivate them to do something with the knowledge they have acquired; in other words, to get them to plant mangroves.

The SEAFLOWER Biosphere Reserve (SBR) is the largest Marine Protected Area in the Caribbean Sea and the second largest in Latin America. Marine protected areas are under pressure from various stressors, one of the most important issues being pollution by marine litter, especially plastic. In this study our aim is to establish the distribution pattern and potential sources of solid waste in the different marine/coastal ecosystems of the islands of Providencia and Santa Catalina (SBR), as well as assess any interconnections between these ecosystems. At the same time, the distribution characteristics of marine litter in the different compartments facilitated a more dynamic understanding of the load of marine litter supplied by the islands, both locally and externally. We observed that certain ecosystems, principally back-beach vegetation and mangroves, act as crucial marine litter accumulation zones. Mangroves are important hotspots for plastic accumulation, with densities above eight items/m2 (minimum 8.38 and maximum 10.38 items/m2), while back-beach vegetation (minimum 1.43 and maximum 7.03 items/m2) also removes and stores a portion of the marine litter that arrives on the beaches. Tourist beaches for recreational activities have a low density of marine litter (minimum 0.01 and maximum 0.72 items/m2) due to regular clean-ups, whereas around non-tourist beaches, there is a greater variety of sources and accumulation (minimum 0.31 and maximum 5.41 items/m2). The low density of marine litter found on corals around the island (0–0.02 items/m2) indicates that there is still no significant marine litter stream to the coral reefs. Identifying contamination levels in terms of marine litter and possible flows between ecosystems is critical for adopting management and reduction strategies for such residues.
