El rendimiento operativo ha sido ampliamente estudiado en la literatura como herramienta para la administración y toma de decisiones en los supermercados. A través de la teoría de colas es posible calcular de manera cuantitativa las medidas de rendimiento operativo en estos establecimientos, con el objeto de tomar decisiones que incidan sobre la eficiencia operacional. A partir del año 2020, con el desafío global debido a la aparición de la pandemia del COVID-19 en los establecimientos comerciales de todo el mundo, incluidos los supermercados, estos se vieron forzados a ajustar la dinámica de su operación y a tomar medidas orientadas a minimizar el riesgo de infección por parte de los clientes, ajustándose a las políticas gubernamentales y de salud pública. Entre una de las medidas adoptadas se encuentra el ajuste del tamaño de aforo máximo permisible en el establecimiento, limitando así el número máximo de clientes que pueden permanecer en estos establecimientos, generando como consecuencia una reducción en sus ventas. Este trabajo presenta el modelamiento de los diferentes sistemas de colas presentes en dos tipos de supermercados: Amazon Go y un supermercado de tipo tradicional, para escenarios con y sin restricciones de aforo por COVID-19. Seguidamente el análisis comparativo de tres indicadores de rendimiento operativo: la Tasa de producción (Throughput), el tiempo de ciclo (Cicle Time) y el Trabajo en Proceso (Work In Process), a través de la implementación de algoritmos programados en el software R y el uso de redes de Jackson. Los resultados de la investigación exhiben los sistemas de colas que presentan mejor desempeño operativo bajo condición de restricción de aforo por COVID19 como sin este, así como las consideraciones especiales que manifiestan estos sistemas.

Apparel industry is characterized by the presence of flexible job-shop systems that have been structured to manufacture a wide range of customized products. However, Flexible Job-shop Scheduling is really chal-lenging and even more complex when setup times, transfer batches and multiple resources are added. In this paper, we present an application of dispatching algorithm for the Flexible Job-shop Scheduling Problem (FJSP) presented in this industry. Days of delay, throughput, earlier date and monthly demand are used as rules of operation selection. A case study in apparel industry is shown to prove the validity of the proposed framework. Results evidence that this approach outperforms the company solution and other algorithms (PGDHS and HHS/LNS) upon reducing average tardiness by 61.1%, 2.63% and 1.77% respectively. The inclusion of throughput in the model resulted in low tardiness for orders with high speed to make money. Promising directions for future research are also proposed.

The throughput of a finite-capacity queueing system is the mean number of clients served during a time interval. The COVID-19 outbreak has posed a serious challenge for many commercial establishments, including the retails, which have struggled to adapt to new working dynamics. Retails have been forced to adjust their service guidelines to comply with biosecurity protocols, ensuring to observe governmental and public health policies. A significant change for the retail market has been the capacity restrictions to ensure social distancing, i.e., a limitation on the number of customers simultaneously shopping in the store. Such a constraint has an impact on the throughput that can be achieved by a retail. This article assesses the impact of the capacity restriction measures on an Amazon Go-like retail performance through a throughput analysis under COVID-19-related capacity restrictions. For the assessment, we first retrieved real data from a retail located in Cartagena, Colombia. Two scenarios were considered: i) low demand and ii) high demand. Further, we built an Amazon Go-like, two-queue, M/M/c/K retail model with a CONWIP (Constant Work-In-Process) approach, considering biosecurity-based capacity restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The R package ‘queueing’ was used to set up the model, and an algorithm was created to go over each sampling period and find the hourly optimum capacity and throughput under the dynamic conditions of both scenarios (low and high demand). Results from the performance analysis show that, for some operational conditions, the optimum maximum throughput is achieved with capacities below the biosecurity-based capacity, while for some other operational conditions the maximum throughput cannot be achieved with the restrictions, as the optimum capacity lies beyond the biosecurity-based capacity. These results suggest that the maximum capacity definition should not be static. Instead, it should be done considering the retail’s dimensions, the biosecurity policies, and the dynamic retail’s operational conditions such as the demand and service capacity.
