Este estudio analiza los modos de apropiación tecnológica, modos de comunicación y subjetividades en Twitter durante las elecciones colombianas de 2018. Metodológicamente se procedió con una etnografía virtual que permitió establecer tendencias de campaña: Castrochavismo, Corrupción y Acuerdos de Paz. Estas categorías se midieron a través del análisis de contenido aplicado a 6.487 tweets de los 5 candidatos en primera vuelta. De dichos trinos se analizó una muestra de 2.525 en perspectiva multidisciplinar. Entre las conclusiones se resalta que los usuarios son objetivados como clientes y sus modos de comunicación mediados por la apropiación tecnológica dificultan la emergencia de una ciudadanía digital.

Due to its popularity, Twitter is currently one of the major players in the global network, which has established a new form of communication: the microblogging. Twitter has become an essential media network for the follow-up, diffusion and coordination of events of diverse nature and importance (Gonzalez-Agirre et al. in Multilingual central repository version 3.0. Proceedings of the Eight International Conference on Language Resources and Evaluation (LREC’12). Istanbul, Turkey, 2012, [1]), such as a presidential campaign, a disaster situation, a war or the repercussion of information. In such scenario, it is considered a relevant source of information to know the opinions that are emitted about different issues or people. This research proposes the evaluation of several supervised classification algorithms to address the problem of opinion mining on Twitter.

The emergence of a networked social structure in the last decade of twentieth century is accelerated by the evolution of information technologies and, in particular, the Internet has given rise to the full emergence of what has been called the Information Age [1] or the Information Society. Social media is yet another example of people’s extraordinary ability to generate, disseminate and exchange meanings in collective interpersonal communication with a massive, real-time networked system where everything tends to be connected. The analysis of the climate of opinion on Twitter is presented around the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), one of the most ambitious educational reforms of the last 50 years in USA.

There is a fast increase of information and data generation in virtual environments due to microblogging sites such as Twitter, a social network that produces an average of 8, 000 tweets per second, and up to 550 million tweets per day. That's why this and many other social networks are overloaded with content, making it difficult for users to identify information topics because of the large number of tweets related to different issues. Due to the uncertainty that harms users who created the content, this study proposes a method for inferring the most representative topics that occurred in a time period of 1 day through the selection of user profiles who are experts in sports and politics. It is calculated considering the number of times this topic was mentioned by experts in their timelines. This experiment included a dataset extracted from Twitter, which contains 10, 750 tweets related to sports and 8, 758 tweets related to politics. All tweets were obtained from user timelines selected by the researchers, who were considered experts in their respective subjects due to the content of their tweets. The results show that the effective selection of users, together with the index of relevance implemented for the topics, can help to more easily find important topics in both sport and politics.

Twitter data mining for the diagnosis of leaks in drinking water distribution networks

This article presents a methodology for using data from social networks, specifically from Twitter, to diagnose leaks in drinking water distribution networks. The methodology involves the collection of tweets from citizens reporting leaks, the extraction of information from the tweets, and the processing of such information to run the diagnosis. To demonstrate the viability of this methodology, 358 Twitter leak reports were collected and analyzed in Mexico City from 1 May to 31 December 2022. From these reports, leak density and probability were calculated, which are metrics that can be used to develop forecasting algorithms, identify root causes, and program repairs. The calculated metrics were compared with those calculated through telephone reports provided by SACMEX, the entity that manages water in Mexico City. Results show that metrics obtained from Twitter and phone reports were highly comparable, indicating the usefulness and reliability of social media data for diagnosing leaks.
