There is still a concern regarding concrete structures' fire safety, mostly due to the occurrence of concrete spalling. Although many tests have already been carried out, there is no clear definition about the parameters of the factors that influence its occurrence. This paper aimed to compare three different types of concrete panels, with dimensions of 300 x 315 x 10 cm (124.0 x 39.4 x 3.9 in.), composed of reinforced concrete (RC), prestressed concrete, and polypropylene microfiber RC. The panels were exposed to the standard fire curve based on ISO 834, aged 28 days, measuring the temperatures in panels' surfaces. Prestressed concrete panels experienced explosive spalling 18 minutes after the test began. RC panels and the panels with polypropylene microfiber addition maintained their integrity and structural stability for 240 minutes, failing in the thermal insulation criteria at 210 and 140 minutes, respectively. Although polypropylene microfiber concrete panels presented no spalling of concrete, conventional concrete panels attended the standardized criteria for a longer period due to its better thermal insulation.

Amín Jiménez, Zareth Laiz | 2021

In this degree work we carried out an investigation where the influence on the compressive strength of the techniques used for curing hydraulic concrete cylinders was analyzed, in order to identify the curing techniques that guarantee or contribute to better compression resistance values and which in turn is useful as a recommendation for the best choice favoring the preservation of quality in the construction of works. The analysis was based on the preparation of 48 cylindrical concrete samples based on a mix design for conventional concrete, considering the characterization of the materials and current regulations. After mixing and manufacturing the samples, 8 different curing techniques were used, some being the most commonly used in the industry and others a little more innovative: total immersion in drinking water, total immersion in water with chemical solution (lime) and temperature control, full seawater immersion, curing agents, polyethylene sheet coating, manual water spray and no curing. Then apply compression tests to the cylinders at the ages of 7 and 28 days. Based on the results obtained, a higher value of compression resistance was obtained in the polyethylene lining technique, as well as the total flooding techniques in tap water, seawater and water with lime according to the NTC 1377 and NTC 3512.

    Murillo, Michel | 2021

Concrete is the most widely used material in construction, which possesses different characteristics and possible manufacturing methods. Concrete is, also, characterized by its high resistance to compression and durability, factors that could have been directly influenced by the curing method in early ages. The objective of this research is to demonstrate the importance of the concrete curing process, as well as to analyze the influence of the chosen curing method on the compression resistance. 48 concrete test samples were manufactured, by the standard requirements. Subsequently, the samples were divided into eight batches, subjected to different types of curing: immersion curing, twice a day; outdoor curing; total immersion curing in different waters, application of commercial curing agent; with polyethylene foil coating and without curing. Performing compression testing at 7 and 28 days. Among the results obtained, the batch that underwent the method of curing with polyethylene coating presented a more efficient effect in terms of resistance to compression; followed by the techniques of immersion in water.
