On the path to economic globalisation, companies are constantly facing opportunities and challenges in their pursuit of business survival and continuous improvement. Due to its strategic conception, innovation management seems to generate the transformations required in the current competitive environment. This article seeks to analyse the dilemma faced by small and medium sized exporting enterprises located in a developing country and regarding what to manage first: product or process innovation. The empirical analysis has been performed in the Colombian Caribbean region. The results revealed that companies focus more on process innovation than on product innovation. Similarly, it is concluded that the former precedes the latter.

Electrical-current-assisted friction stir welding (EA-FSW) is a procedure developed for the joining of similar and dissimilar materials. EA-FSW is a newly invented solid-state process to increase welded components’ efficacy in various applications, such as marine structures. EA-FSW joints have investigated the dissimilar joints on aluminum–magnesium, aluminum–steel, and polymer-to-steel. Similar joints have been performed on aluminum, magnesium, and steel. The main parameters that affect the temperature of the nugget in EA-FSW are electrical current and tool rotational velocity. This review paper presents the fundamental principle of EA-FSW, its processes mechanism, and various types of tools, and discusses the different joints that EA-FSW welded. The effect of electrical current on the quality of similar and dissimilar joints is discussed. The simulation process and detailed modeling of the EA-FSW process are discussed in the last section.

What is presented in this research is an intelligent system for detecting the volume percentage of three-phase fluids passing through oil pipes. The structure of the detection system consists of an X-ray tube, a Pyrex galss pipe, and two sodium iodide detectors. A three-phase fluid of water, gas, and oil has been simulated inside the pipe in two flow regimes, annular and stratified. Different volume percentages from 10 to 80% are considered for each phase. After producing and emitting X-rays from the source and passing through the pipe containing a three-phase fluid, the intensity of photons is recorded by two detectors. The simulation is introduced by a Monte Carlo N-Particle (MCNP) code. After the implementation of all flow regimes in different volume percentages, the signals recorded by the detectors were recorded and labeled. Three frequency characteristics and five wavelet transform characteristics were extracted from the received signals of each detector, which were collected in a total of 16 characteristics from each test. The feature selection system based on the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm was applied to determine the best combination of extracted features. The result was the introduction of seven features as the best features to determine volume percentages. The introduced characteristics were considered as the input of a Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) neural network, whose structure had seven input neurons (selected characteristics) and two output neurons (volume percentage of gas and water). The highest error obtained in determining volume percentages was equal to 0.13 as MSE, a low error compared with previous works. Using the PSO algorithm to select the most optimal features, the current research’s accuracy in determining volume percentages has significantly increased.

Innovation activities and their impact on product innovation results: evidence from a sectorial study

In the current competitive context, innovation has become a necessity, to the point that it seems that no company can survive without developing innovation processes. One of the great concerns of small and medium-sized companies is about the investment of resources in innovation activities and their success. Therefore, this article analyzes the influence of different innovation activities performed by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) of the Colombian Caribbean region on their product innovation outcomes and thereby provides a solid groundwork for the design of innovation strategies. To achieve this objective, a data collection instrument was first validated in 56 SMEs, followed by the application of a reflective measurement model with convergent validity analysis. The results of the model application revealed that investment in Research and Development (R&D) and innovation, knowledge transfer, technology adoption, and financial aspects explain to a greater extent the introduction of new products to the market.

Measuring the void fraction of different multiphase flows in various fields such as gas, oil, chemical, and petrochemical industries is very important. Various methods exist for this purpose. Among these methods, the capacitive sensor has been widely used. The thing that affects the performance of capacitance sensors is fluid properties. For instance, density, pressure, and temperature can cause vast errors in the measurement of the void fraction. A routine calibration, which is very grueling, is one approach to tackling this issue. In the present investigation, an artificial neural network (ANN) was modeled to measure the gas percentage of a two-phase flow regardless of the liquid phase type and changes, without having to recalibrate. For this goal, a new combined capacitance-based sensor was designed. This combined sensor was simulated with COMSOL Multiphysics software. Five different liquids were simulated: oil, gasoil, gasoline, crude oil, and water. To estimate the gas percentage of a homogeneous two-phase fluid with a distinct type of liquid, data obtained from COMSOL Multiphysics were used as input to train a multilayer perceptron network (MLP). The proposed neural network was modeled in MATLAB software. Using the new and accurate metering system, the proposed MLP model could predict the void fraction with a mean absolute error (MAE) of 4.919.

The incorporation of best technological practices or components guides the development of processes and promotes transformations with new approaches in organizational structures. In this regard, it is necessary to increase productivity and competitiveness levels of SMEs. However, having greater knowledge about the type of activities to be implemented for the development of innovations in process is one of the main difficulties usually hindering the growth potential of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs). Among the key factors leading to innovation, we find the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) activities entailing cooperation and the pursuit of R&D activities based on that increase productivity and competitiveness. Nevertheless, several young or small firms do not have those capabilities, and it is paramount for them to know which type of HCI activities they must undertake to allocate their innovation resources adequately to obtain outstanding results. For this purpose, this paper aims to determine the effect of diverse HCI innovation activities on the deployment of innovations within exporter SMEs’ processes. First, we carried out a survey for collecting data on different innovation variables encompassing both activities and processes of 56 exporter SMEs. The data analyzed in this study derive from a structured questionnaire with 21 questions, out of which 16 measured orientations to process innovation, production and distribution methods, techniques, teams and technologies for production whin improve quality; and 5 questions measure the type of innovation activities, such as R&D, links to information sources, cooperation on innovation, scientific, technological, organizational and financial actions. The main economic sectors of these firms are chemical products, fertilizers and pesticides, pharmaceutical and medications, plastic and its manufactures, iron, steel and its manufactures, minerals, oils, vegetal and animals. The model proposed in this study through correlation tests and factorial analyses will allow companies in these economic sectors to know which are the different HCI innovation activities that should be pursued and allow them to devise strategies focusing their efforts and resources in innovative processes. Then, correlation tests and factor analyses were undertaken to identify the main HCI drivers of process innovations in these companies. The results revealed the association between the ease of the technological component through the development of scientific and technological activities with: the number of new or significantly improved processes, techniques, equipment and computer programs to optimize production (p-value = 0.005 χ2 = 12.67); with the implementation of a significant and improved distribution method (p-value = 0,001 χ2 = 15,59) and the implementation of a new production method (p-value = 0,030 χ2 = 7,014). Likewise, it is evinced a significant positive association between the investment on Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) and the number of significantly improved product distribution methods (p-value = 0.019 χ2 = 9.9). These results make it possible to identify the main drivers and the main HCI activities that have an effect on the deployment of process innovations that will benefit the activities of these companies in the long term and boost economic growth. This study serves as a guideline for countries where the required levels of productivity and competitiveness have not been achieved due to the low level of investment in innovation activities and technologies.

The goal of this research is to determine the influence of organizational culture on business competitive strategy and its impact on the export performance of SMEs in Barranquilla, Colombia. The study took place from August to November, 2015, and it consisted on a telephone survey applied to a sample of 136 companies, from a population of 165 companies in the area, and a response rate of 50 companies. The theoretical approaches used were the proposed by Cameron and Quinn (2006), related to the cultural factors, and by Porter (1990) and Miles & Snow (1978) for the strategic factors. The results showed that culture has no influence on the strategy, and that the most common strategic orientation used by the companies surveyed is the analyzer type. Regarding the impact of the strategy on export performance, we determined that it does not exist. Regression calculations were made to test the hypotheses, and they were rejected. SMEs surveyed do not have a good export performance according to the Export Performance Index (IDE). All these data were analyzed using the SPSS software.

In this study, the effects of two geometrical parameters of the re-entrant auxetic cells, namely, internal cell angle (𝜃 ) and H/L ratio in which H is the cell height, and L is the cell length, have been studied on the variations of Poisson’s ratio and fatigue life of Aluminum 7075-T6 auxetic structures. Five different values of both the H/L ratio and angle 𝜃 were selected. Numerical simulations and fatigue life predictions have been conducted through the use of ABAQUS (version 2022) and MSC Fatigue (version 11.0) software. Results revealed that increases in both the H/L ratio and angle 𝜃 improved the average value of Poisson’s ratio. Increasing the H/L ratio from 1 to 1.4 and 𝜃 from 50° to 70° increased the values of Poisson’s ratio, respectively, 7.7% and 80%. In all angles, increasing the H/L values decreased the fatigue life of the structures significantly. Furthermore, in all H/L values, an increment in 𝜃 caused a reduction in fatigue life. The effects of H/L and 𝜃 parameters on fatigue life were dominant in the low cycle fatigue regime. Results also showed that the H/L ratio parameter had greater influence as compared to the 𝜃 angle, and the structures with higher auxeticity experienced higher fatigue resistance. It was found that the auxetic property of the structure has a direct relationship with the fatigue resistance of the structure. In all samples, structures with greater auxetic property had higher fatigue resistance.

The Internet of Drones (IoD) allows for coordinated control of airspace for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), also known as drones. The decreasing costs of processors, sensors, and wireless connectivity have made it possible to use UAVs in many variety of military to civilian applications. While most applications utilizing the drones in the IoD have been real-time related, users are now interested in obtaining real-time services from drones that are tailored to a specific fly zone. This study develops a Sea Turtle Foraging Algorithm with Hybrid Deep Learning-based Intrusion Detection (STFA-HDLID) as a algorithm that recognizes and categorizes intrusions in the IoD environment. For this purpose, it is necessary to implement data pre-processing to standardize the input data via min-max normalization. Additionally, the feature selection process is also based on the STFA. Finally, a Deep Belief Network (DBN) with a Sparrow Search Optimization (SSO) algorithm is used for classification. A comprehensive experimental analysis is performed on a benchmark dataset to demonstrate the performance of the STFA-HDLID, which achieves maximum accuracy of 99.51% and 98.85% on the TON_IoT and UNSW-NB15 datasets, respectively, outperforming other techniques.

The scholarly world has demonstrated an immense enthusiasm for medical image segmentation due to its intricate nature and critical role in medical diagnosis and treatment systems. Multi-threshold image segmentation (MTIS) is a popular technique for this purpose, due to its simplicity and straightforwardness. This paper presents an improved Differential Evolution (DE) algorithm called AGDE, which is based on MTIS and was used to evaluate its high capability at IEEE CEC 2017. Comparisons with classical and advanced algorithms were conducted as part of the experiments. An AGDE-based multi-threshold image segmentation method utilizing a non-local mean 2D histogram in combination with Rényi's entropy was applied to segment images from the Berkeley Segmentation Datasets 500 (BSDS500) and microscopic images of thyroid papillary carcinoma (TPC). The experimental results showed that the proposed image segmentation method outperformed its competitors, making it a promising approach for medical image segmentation.

Satisfacción laboral en las Pyme colombianas del sector textil- confección

El objetivo de este artículo es analizar la satisfacción de los empleados de las pyme exportadoras del sector textil-confección de Barranquilla, Colombia. La perspectiva teórica se orientó fundamentalmente considerando los aportes realizados por Robbins y Judge (2009). En este sentido, se desarrolló una investigación sustentada en el paradigma cuantitativo, con diseño no experimental transeccional, para lo cual se realizó un censo constituido por las 19 pyme exportadoras del sector. Los datos fueron procesados mediante la utilización de medidas de tendencia central, evidenciándose que los indicadores por debajo de la media establecida corresponden a la variedad de trabajo, reconocimiento del desempeño, seguridad, estabilidad, oportunidades y relación con los compañeros; mientras que los indicadores referidos al salario, estructura y flexibilidad laboral, alcanzaron los niveles de mayor satisfacción. Se concluye, que los efectos globlalizadores en este sector, exigen que las empresas colombianas definan estrategias orientadas a potenciar la satisfacción en los atributos del empleo, dado que el recurso humano se constituye en su factor más importante de competitividad.

Este artículo tiene como propósito presentar avances del proyecto titulado “Promoción, desarrollo y fortalecimiento a organizaciones solidarias de los departamentos del Atlántico, Bolívar y Magdalena”; específicamente sur del Atlántico, sobre aspectos generales de las unidades productivas o micro-emprendimientos en el marco de la política pública. Así mismo, la asociatividad como elemento clave en la dinámica actual de la economía y su relación con los micro-emprendimientos, a partir de la creación de organizaciones de economía solidaria y el reto que implica gestionarlas. Se reflexiona sobre la conexión entre los planteamientos teóricos y las características generales que distinguen este tipo de emprendimientos. Los avances del proyecto y la revisión teórica evidencian que estos microemprendimientos tienen grandes limitaciones para ser sostenibles y rentables. Además, el individualismo y desconfianza son obstáculos para la asociatividad. Sumado a ello, cuando se logran los procesos de asociatividad de manera formal y se crean organizaciones de economía solidaria se presenta una problemática: su gestión. Porque las personas carecen de las competencias necesarias para realizarlo. A través de la política pública se ha impulsado el fortalecimiento de las pequeñas unidades; pero aún existe gran brecha entre la dinámica de estas y la operatividad de la política pública.

Since November 2019, the COVID-19 Pandemic produced by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Severe Coronavirus 2 (hereafter COVID-19) has caused approximately seven million deaths globally. Several studies have been conducted using technological tools to prevent infection, to prevent spread, to detect, to vaccinate, and to treat patients with COVID-19. This work focuses on identifying and analyzing machine learning (ML) algorithms used for detection (prediction and diagnosis), monitoring (treatment, hospitalization), and control (vaccination, medical prescription) of COVID-19 and its variants. This study is based on PRISMA methodology and combined bibliometric analysis through VOSviewer with a sample of 925 articles between 2019 and 2022 derived in the prioritization of 32 papers for analysis. Finally, this paper discusses the study’s findings, which are directions for applying ML to address COVID-19 and its variants.

Experimental air conditioning energy evaluation under Caribbean climate conditions

A 23 factorial design was performed to analyze the performance of a mini-split air conditioning system under several psychrometric air conditions at the evaporator inlet, similar to Tropical Caribbean region conditions. In addition, a search for new energy-saving opportunities was performed. The results showed that interactions between the temperature of the air inlet, the humidity of the air inlet, and the fan speed level are significant in the mini-split energy performance under Caribbean climate conditions. Hence, working on an oriented energy savings control strategy is necessary. Therefore, this study recommends developing a fan speed control scheme, generating energy savings of around 10% in the air conditioning unit.

Academic reputation quality and research: an analysis of Latin-American universities in the world higher education institution rankings from the perspective of organizational learning theory

The purpose of the research is to theorise about the determinants of academic reputation and the moderating effects of aspiration performance in Latin-American universities present in three of the most important rankings in the world: The Times Higher Education, QS World University Rankings, Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU). To achieve the research purpose, a time series panel is performed. Our general model trying to evaluate the effect of aspirational performance 15 on the relationship between Faculty quality (Research and Teaching) and Academic Reputation in Latin American Countries was specified. The database considered in the research includes the universities classified in the Times Higher Education ranking (THE), QS World University Rankings (QS), and Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) from 20 2011 to 2022. Concerning the results, it was possible to verify that the ranking of performance in research and the ranking of performance in quality does not have a significant relationship with academic reputation. While ranking performance in quality and research according to the category of countries, a positive and robust impact was observed. 25 Similarly, it was found that the regions’ moderating effect on the relationship between quality and research and its impact on the academic reputation of higher education institutions. As a general conclusion of the article, it is possible to show that regional dynamics of the location of university institutions define the strategy from which the institution’s 30 performance is improved. Therefore, the importance of the influence of environmental actors on performance is identified.

Marketing strategy and competitiveness: evidence from Colombian SMEs

This study evaluates how three distinct marketing strategies (i.e., marketing communication, marketing innovation, and marketing uniqueness) impact the competitiveness level of Colombian SMEs. We use a unique primary dataset drawn from the Global Competitiveness Project that includes information for 176 Colombian SMEs during 2019. We employ a regression model to test the proposed hypotheses highlighting the relevance of marketing innovation, uniqueness, and communication for SMEs' competitiveness. The findings reveal that Colombian SMEs are frequent users of marketing strategies. Results show that larger SMEs that use marketing strategies are more competitive than smaller ones. It was also found that strategic emphasis, which implies that SMEs work with one of the evaluated strategies, contributes to competitiveness. However, managers should consider the synergistic effects of using more than one strategy. The relevance of this study is to present a model that shows how larger SMEs can capitalize on different marketing strategies to consolidate their competitiveness level in the Colombian context.

El Bullying es un fenómeno social contemporáneo que impacta en múltiples estructuras y contextos sociales. Este estudio tuvo como objetivo establecer la asociación entre funciones ejecutivas (FE), cognición social en adolescentes y el bullying. Estudio descriptivo transversal con una muestra de 109 sujetos seleccionados mediante un muestreo por conveniencia. Se realizó una regresión logística multinomial, encontrando que la cognición social es un factor protector (OR: .17 IC 95% .05-.59) (OR: .27 IC 95% .08- .85) en el grupo de los agresores respecto a los controles; así como en el grupo de víctimas respecto a los controles (OR: .15 IC 95% .05 – .42) (OR: .30 IC 95% (.11- .82). De esta manera, una adecuada cognición social se asocia como un factor protector ante el bullying y el presentar déficits en las FE se asocia a un incremento del riesgo de tres veces de padecerlo.

Horizontal and vertical crossover of sine cosine algorithm with quick moves for optimization and feature selection

The sine cosine algorithm (SCA) is a metaheuristic algorithm proposed in recent years that does not resort to nature-related metaphors but explores and exploits the search space with the help of two simple mathematical functions of sine and cosine. SCA has fewer parameters and a simple structure and is widely used in various fields. However, it tends to fall into local optimality because it does not have a well-balanced exploitation and exploration phase. Therefore, in this paper, a new, improved SCA algorithm (QCSCA) is proposed to improve the performance of the algorithm by introducing a quick move mechanism and a crisscross mechanism to SCA and adaptively improving one of the parameters. To verify the effectiveness of QCSCA, comparison experiments with some conventional metaheuristic algorithms, advanced metaheuristic algorithms, and SCA variants are conducted on IEEE CEC2017 and CEC2013. The experimental results show a significant improvement in the convergence speed and the ability to jump out of the local optimum of the QCSCA. The scalability of the algorithm is verified in the benchmark function. In addition, QCSCA is applied to 14 real-world datasets from the UCI machine learning database for selecting a subset of near-optimal features, and the experimental results show that QCSCA is still very competitive in feature selection (FS) compared to similar algorithms. Our experimental results and analysis show that QCSCA is an effective method for solving global optimization problems and FS problems.
