Colombia, as a tropical country surrounded by two oceans and bathed by many rivers, is a
place of exceptional fishing conditions. Aquaculture, on the other hand has become for the
Colombian government a high priority activity under the responsibility of the National
Aquaculture and Fisheries Authority (AUNAP).
The purpose of AUNAP is to exercise the Colombian fishing and aquaculture authority, and
for this purpose it gives planning, research, promotion, regulation, registration, information,
inspection, surveillance and control of fishing and aquaculture activities, applying sanctions
to those who deserves it, whit a policy of promotion and sustainable development of these
resources. In these activities, they must use chemical and biological supplies which can be
categorized as hazardous wastes.
Nowadays, there isn't much information about the hazardous wastes management by the
aquaculture stations in Colombia, for that reason this investigation was formulated to
propose sustainable strategies for the management of those wastes generated by the
aquaculture station of Repelon, Atlantico.
This was done trough visits to the station and the appliance of a check list that gave
valuable information for the development of this project, this represented a difficulty since
there wasn't registries nor they didn't realize a correct management of those hazardous
wastes. With this information , an initial diagnose was made to establish the main reason
for that inappropriate management. And together with the identification of the environmental impacts produced, gave the necesary information to create the Hazardous
Wastes Management Plan, in which the strategies were based on the green chemistry,
which, finally, sustain the sustainability of this project
