Energy literacy, which encompasses a broad content of knowledge, as well as affective and behavioral characteristics, will enable people to make appropriate decisions related to energy and accept changes in the way we take advantage of and consume energy. Energy literacy was measured with a written questionnaire prepared in the city of New York, United States and adapted to the conditions of the city of Barranquilla, Colombia. The results indicate that students are concerned about energy problems but relatively low cognitive and behavioral scores suggest that students may lack the knowledge and skills they need to contribute effectively towards solutions. Despite the increase in knowledge, there was a significant drop in energy conservation behavior among students in secondary education and intermediate education. The inter-correlations between groups of questions indicate that energy-related behaviors are more related to affect than to knowledge. These findings underscore the need for education that improves energy literacy by impacting students' attitudes, values and behaviors, as well as a broad content of knowledge.eng
