The Atlantic department is characterized by flat and undulating soils, moderate low fertility and a lack of humidity during much of the year, obstructing the development of agricultural activities. However, in the south of the department, the municipality of Repelón is recognized by its agricultural activity, nevertheless, there are no studies that report the quality of soil in this region.
The present work evaluated physicochemical characteristics of agricultural soils of the Repelón Irrigation District, with the objective of diagnosing the current state of fertility and its variability according to the dry season (June) or rainy season (October) in 2016. Ten sampling points were selected in the dry season and twelve in the rainy season, sampling at a depth of 0-30 cm in duplicate. The evaluated properties were moisture, texture and color corresponding to the physical analysis and pH, salinity, organic matter (OM), cation exchange capacity (CIC), total nitrogen (N) and available phosphorus in the chemical analysis. The non-parametric Kruskal Wallis test and the comparisons of the ranges with a p-value <0.05 was made, and it was found that according to the season, OM and N were the only parameters that presented significant differences, the highest values in the dry season were 6.16% and 0.203%, and in the rainy season were 4.71% and 0.154%, respectively. In addition, the Spearman correlation was used to know the degree of association between the parameters. The CIC was the best parameter that was related to the other evaluated properties. Finally, through of a test of conglomerates and Analysis of Principal Components (PCA) the grouping of the analyzed variables was verified, obtaining three significant groups: pH and salinity; CIC and moisture and, OM, N and P. According to the physicochemical characteristics of the agricultural soils of the Repelón Irrigation District, this one is in optimal conditions in terms of fertility, that is to say, allow the development of agricultural activities with management practices that do not represent a significant degree of soil affectation. In addition, during the dry season, when agricultural activity is not developed, soils improve their physicochemical properties. Finally, is recommended to implement practices that allow to improve the quality of the soil during the rainy season for a better development of agricultural activities
